MacBook Battery Draining Too Fast — Why and How to Fix It
A MacBook battery that drains much faster than it used to is usually caused by a background process consuming CPU, battery health degradation after 18–24 months of use, or changed system settings.
A MacBook battery that drains much faster than it used to is usually caused by a background process consuming CPU, battery health degradation after 18–24 months of use, or changed system settings.
Common causes:
- Battery health has degraded below 80% capacity
- A background process consuming high CPU
- Screen brightness set very high
- Location services and background app refresh running constantly
- macOS update reset power-saving settings
Check battery health
Apple menu → System Settings → Battery → Battery Health. If capacity is below 80%, replacement is worthwhile.
Check what's using battery
System Settings → Battery → scroll down for battery usage by app. Identify and restrict high-drain apps.
Check Activity Monitor for CPU drain
Activity Monitor → CPU → sort by % CPU. Any process using 20%+ consistently is draining battery. Common culprits: Spotlight, browser processes, cloud sync apps.
Reduce screen brightness
Enable Auto-Brightness (System Settings → Displays → Auto-Brightness). Screen brightness is one of the biggest battery drains.
Enable Low Power Mode
System Settings → Battery → enable Low Power Mode. Reduces background activity and extends battery life significantly.
Turn off unnecessary background services
System Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services — off for apps that don't need it.
When to call a technician
