Gaming PC Throttling and Shutting Down — Fixed in One Visit
Frame rates cut in half. Random shutdowns. One diagnosis revealed the real problem.
The Situation
A Castle Hill gamer contacted TechFix Pro after their gaming desktop — a mid-range machine built two years prior — started experiencing severe performance issues. Frame rates in demanding games had dropped by roughly half over the past few months. The PC was now randomly shutting down during gaming sessions, requiring a hard restart. Temperatures reported by monitoring software were hitting 95°C on the CPU before shutdown.
What We Found
Opening the case revealed the culprit immediately: the CPU cooler was completely clogged with dust — a thick mat of compacted dust between the heatsink fins had effectively insulated the cooler, preventing it from dissipating heat. The cooler fan was still spinning but moving no air through the blocked fins. Cleaning the cooler revealed a secondary issue: the original thermal paste between the CPU and cooler had dried out and cracked. This is a known issue with stock thermal paste after 18–24 months — it loses thermal conductivity as it ages and dries, meaning even a clean cooler is less effective. The GPU showed similar dust accumulation though less severe. The case fans were also running at maximum speed — the PC was working as hard as it could to cool itself and still failing.
How We Fixed It
**Cleaning:** Full compressed air clean of the entire interior. CPU cooler removed and cleaned thoroughly — the dust mat blocking the fins was substantial. GPU cooler cleaned. All case fans cleaned. Cable management improved to improve airflow. **Thermal paste replacement:** Old dried thermal paste removed from CPU (IHS) and cooler contact plate using isopropyl alcohol. Arctic MX-6 thermal compound applied using the five-dot method — a high-performance paste with an 8-year stable lifespan. **Fan curve optimisation:** CPU fan curve adjusted in BIOS to be more aggressive at lower temperatures — the PC was previously waiting too long before spinning the fan up to speed. **Testing:** 30-minute gaming stress test. Peak CPU temperature: 68°C. GPU temperature: 71°C. Zero throttling detected. Frame rates returned to original performance figures.
The Outcome
CPU peak temperature reduced from 95°C to 68°C — a 27-degree improvement. Gaming performance fully restored. No shutdowns in the two months since the service. Total cost: $129. The owner now has a reminder set for annual preventive cleaning.
What every PC gamer should know about heat
Dust is the silent killer of gaming PCs
A gaming PC in a home environment accumulates significant dust within 12–18 months. Unlike office computers that sit idle, gaming PCs run hard — and dust-clogged coolers under load lead directly to throttling, shutdowns, and potentially permanent CPU or GPU damage.
Thermal paste expires
Stock thermal paste on most PC builds and laptops is designed for cost, not longevity. After 18–24 months it begins to dry and crack, losing thermal conductivity. Replacing it with quality aftermarket paste is a standard part of any performance-restoration service.
Thermal throttling looks like a hardware upgrade problem
Owners often conclude their hardware is outdated when performance drops and look at buying new GPUs or CPUs. In many cases, the hardware is fine — it is simply overheating and throttling performance to protect itself.
Annual cleaning is preventive maintenance, not optional
An annual compressed air clean of a gaming PC interior takes 20 minutes and prevents the majority of heat-related issues. We offer this as a standalone service for $79, often combined with a thermal paste replacement for $129 total.
Frequently asked questions
How much does gaming PC servicing cost in Western Sydney?
A clean and thermal paste replacement is $129 on-site at your home. Diagnostics are included in this price. If additional faults are found, we quote separately before proceeding.
My laptop shuts down when gaming — is it the same problem?
Very often yes. Laptop thermal paste ages and dust accumulates in the cooling system just like a desktop. The fix is the same — clean the cooling system, replace thermal paste. Laptop service is $129–$180 on-site.
Will cleaning my PC void the warranty?
No. Opening a PC case to clean the interior does not void any manufacturer warranty. Thermal paste replacement is considered routine maintenance.
How often should a gaming PC be cleaned?
Every 12 months in a normal home environment. If the PC is on the floor in a carpeted room, every 6–9 months. Homes with pets (especially dogs and cats) may need cleaning every 4–6 months due to pet hair buildup.
