Why Is My Laptop So Slow? 5 Common Causes and How to Fix Them

By Ragu — TechFix Pro·June 2026·5 min read
A slow laptop is the most common complaint we hear at TechFix Pro. The good news is that most slow laptop issues can be fixed — and many can be sorted without spending a cent.

1. Too many programs running at startup

This is the number one cause of a slow laptop — and the easiest to fix. Every time you install a program, it often adds itself to your startup list. After a few years of installing software, your laptop might be trying to load 20-30 programs every time you turn it on.

How to fix it: On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, click the Startup tab, and disable anything you do not need to load at boot. On Mac, go to System Settings → General → Login Items and remove unnecessary apps.

2. Not enough RAM for what you are doing

RAM (memory) is what your laptop uses to run programs. If you are running a browser with 20 tabs, plus Microsoft Word, plus your email client, a laptop with only 4GB or 8GB of RAM will slow to a crawl.

How to fix it: Check how much RAM you are currently using (Task Manager on Windows → Performance tab). If you are consistently above 80%, a RAM upgrade is worth considering. Many laptops can be upgraded to 16GB or 32GB for under $100 in parts.

3. A nearly full hard drive or old HDD

When your storage drive is more than 80% full, your laptop slows significantly because it runs out of space to use as temporary working memory. Old mechanical hard drives (HDDs) are also dramatically slower than modern SSDs.

How to fix it: Delete files you no longer need and empty the recycle bin. If your laptop has an old HDD, replacing it with an SSD is the single biggest speed improvement you can make — and we do this every day at TechFix Pro. A laptop that takes 3 minutes to start up will often boot in under 20 seconds after an SSD upgrade.

4. Malware or a virus in the background

Viruses, spyware and other malware often run silently in the background, using your processor and memory for their own purposes. If your laptop suddenly became slow — especially if you have noticed pop-ups, redirects or strange behaviour — malware is a likely cause.

How to fix it: Run a full scan with Windows Defender or Malwarebytes. If the scan finds threats and removing them does not fix the slowness, call a technician — some malware is stubborn and requires deeper removal.

5. Overheating and thermal throttling

Laptops slow themselves down deliberately when they overheat — a process called thermal throttling. Dust building up inside the vents over the years reduces airflow and causes the processor to run hot, which triggers this automatic slowdown.

How to fix it: If your laptop is more than 2-3 years old and feels hot or sounds like the fan is running constantly, it likely needs an internal clean and fresh thermal paste applied to the processor. This is a job for a technician — we do this regularly and it can make an old laptop feel new again.

When to call a technician

If your laptop is still slow after trying the above, or if it is taking more than 5 minutes to start up, it is worth getting a professional diagnosis. Many slow laptop fixes take under an hour and cost less than $100.

Summary — slow laptop checklist

  • Disable unnecessary startup programs
  • Check RAM usage and consider an upgrade
  • Free up disk space or upgrade to an SSD
  • Run a malware scan
  • Clean the vents and replace thermal paste if overheating
