SSD Not Showing Up in Windows — Step-by-Step Fix

An SSD that doesn't appear in File Explorer is almost always a configuration issue rather than a failed drive. New SSDs especially require initialisation before Windows will show them.

An SSD that doesn't appear in File Explorer is almost always a configuration issue rather than a failed drive. New SSDs especially require initialisation before Windows will show them.

Common causes:

  • New SSD not initialised and has no partition
  • SSD has no drive letter assigned
  • NVMe SSD driver not installed
  • SSD not detected at BIOS level
  • Partition is RAW or has a corrupted file system
1

Check Disk Management first

Windows + X → Disk Management. If SSD shows as Unallocated: right-click → New Simple Volume → follow the wizard. If no drive letter: right-click → Change Drive Letter and Paths → Add.

2

Initialise a new SSD

If shows as Not Initialized: right-click → Initialize Disk → choose GPT for modern computers. Then create a New Simple Volume.

3

Install NVMe drivers for M.2 SSDs

Check your laptop or motherboard manufacturer's website for NVMe or storage controller drivers. Intel RST drivers are commonly needed.

4

Check BIOS/UEFI settings

Enter BIOS. Find Storage Configuration. Confirm the SSD appears in the BIOS drive list. If it doesn't, it's a physical connection issue.

5

Reseat the SSD

For M.2 SSDs: power off, remove and reseat firmly. Ensure the retention screw is in place. For SATA SSDs: check both data and power cables.

6

Update storage controller drivers

Device Manager → IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers → update any outdated drivers.

When to call a technician

If the SSD is not detected in BIOS at all after reseating, it may be incompatible or faulty. TechFix Pro tests SSDs on-site and advises on compatible replacements.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my new SSD not showing up in Windows?

A new SSD needs to be initialised and partitioned. It appears in Disk Management as Uninitialized or Unallocated — right-click and follow the wizard.

Does SSD not showing up mean it's broken?

Not usually — almost always a configuration issue. Missing initialisation, no drive letter, or a driver issue.

Can you recover data from an SSD not showing up?

If the SSD appears in Disk Management with a RAW file system, data recovery is often possible. Do not format before consulting a data recovery specialist.
