Cloning a hard drive to an SSD copies everything — Windows, all programs, all settings and all files — to the new drive without any reinstallation. Here is exactly how.
What you need
A new SSD at least as large as the data on your existing drive. A USB-to-SATA adapter. Macrium Reflect Free cloning software (free, reliable, from macrium.com).
Download and install Macrium Reflect Free
Download from macrium.com. Install on your current Windows system. Connect the new SSD via USB adapter. Open Macrium Reflect — it detects both drives automatically.
Create the clone
In Macrium Reflect: click Clone this disk next to your source drive. Select the new SSD as destination. Click Next → Finish → Run now. Takes 1–3 hours.
Fix partition sizes after cloning
If the source drive was larger than the SSD, use the Clone Disk Properties step to extend the Windows partition to fill the new SSD.
Swap the drives
Power off. Open back panel. Remove the old HDD and install the new SSD. Reassemble. Power on — Windows boots from the new SSD.
Verify the clone worked
Confirm all programs, files and settings are intact. Place the old HDD in the external enclosure as a backup.
