A laptop stuck on the loading screen — the spinning dots or Windows logo that never progresses — is one of the most common faults. In most cases it is a software issue and fixable without losing your data.
Common causes:
- A recent Windows update that didn't complete properly
- A startup program or driver causing boot failure
- Corrupted system files
- A failing hard drive slowing boot to a crawl
- A connected USB device interrupting boot
Disconnect all external devices
Unplug everything — USB drives, hard drives, printers, phones. Restart with only the power cable connected.
Force restart three times to trigger Startup Repair
Hold the power button until the laptop turns off. Repeat three times — after three failed boots Windows automatically launches Startup Repair.
Let Windows Automatic Repair run
If Startup Repair launches, let it run. It fixes corrupted boot files and incomplete updates — 10–30 minutes. Do not interrupt.
Boot into Safe Mode
Advanced Options → Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Startup Settings → Restart → press 4. In Safe Mode, check Device Manager for yellow warning icons.
Run System File Checker
Advanced Options → Command Prompt: sfc /scannow then DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Check hard drive health
Advanced Options → Command Prompt: chkdsk C: /f /r — checks for bad sectors causing boot loops.
Run Startup Repair manually
Advanced Options → Startup Repair. Run up to three times to repair the Windows boot sector.
When to call a technician
If none of the above resolve the issue, the fault is likely a failing hard drive. Call TechFix Pro before the drive fails completely and takes your data with it. No Fix, No Fee.
Frequently asked questions
Will I lose my files if my laptop is stuck on the loading screen?
Not necessarily — a startup loop is usually a software fault and data is intact. We recover data as a priority before any reinstallation.
How long does startup repair take?
Windows Automatic Repair typically takes 15–45 minutes. More than an hour with no progress means it has stalled.
Why does my laptop keep getting stuck?
Most commonly caused by a failing hard drive, an incomplete Windows update, or a recently installed driver. An SSD upgrade resolves the majority of drive-related cases.
