Computer Keeps Restarting? Here Is Why — and How to Stop It

By Ragu — TechFix Pro·June 2026·6 min read
Few things are as maddening as a computer that restarts on its own — sometimes mid-task, sometimes in an endless loop before Windows even loads. The cause is almost always one of a small number of known culprits. This guide walks through each, from the simplest to the most serious, so you can narrow it down quickly.

First: is it crashing or just restarting?

There is an important difference. A computer that flashes a blue screen and then reboots is crashing — Windows hit a fatal error and restarted to protect itself. A computer that simply cuts out and reboots with no warning is more likely a power or heat problem. Noticing which one you have points you toward the right fix.

By default, Windows restarts instantly after a crash, hiding the error. Turn that off so you can read it: search for Advanced system settings, open Startup and Recovery, and untick automatic restart. Next time it crashes, you will see the actual error message — invaluable for diagnosis.

Overheating — the most common cause

When a processor gets too hot, the computer shuts down or restarts to avoid damage. This is by far the most common reason for random reboots, especially in older machines or during demanding tasks like gaming or video calls. Dust clogging the vents and fans is usually behind it.

Feel whether the machine is hot and listen for fans running flat out. On a desktop, open it up and clear dust from the fans and heatsink. On a laptop, an internal clean and fresh thermal paste often cures persistent heat-related restarts. If reboots happen mainly under load, heat is your prime suspect.

Faulty or failing power supply

On a desktop, a dying power supply unit cannot deliver steady voltage, so the machine resets without warning. These failures often worsen over time and can happen at idle or under load. A failing PSU can also damage other parts, so it is worth addressing promptly.

On a laptop, a failing battery or a charger that cannot keep up can cause sudden reboots, particularly when the system demands more power. Try running the laptop on charger alone, or on battery alone, to see if one is the trigger — it helps isolate the fault fast.

Driver and Windows update problems

A bad driver — especially for graphics — is a classic cause of crash-and-restart loops. If the restarts began right after a Windows update or a new driver install, that is your lead. Booting into Safe Mode lets Windows load with minimal drivers so you can roll back the offending one.

From Safe Mode you can uninstall a recent update or driver, or use System Restore to roll the computer back to before the problem started. If the restarts stop in Safe Mode but return in normal mode, you have confirmed software — not hardware — is to blame.

Malware and viruses

Some malware deliberately destabilises Windows or hijacks system processes, causing crashes and reboots. If restarts come alongside pop-ups, sluggishness or strange behaviour, run a full scan with Windows Defender or Malwarebytes from Safe Mode where infections are easier to remove.

Stubborn infections sometimes survive a basic scan and need deeper removal. If a clean scan does not stop the reboots but other symptoms point to infection, it is worth having a technician verify the system is truly clean rather than chasing ghosts.

Failing RAM or storage

Faulty memory throws random crashes that are hard to pin down, because they appear during all sorts of unrelated tasks. Windows has a built-in tool — search for Windows Memory Diagnostic — that tests your RAM and flags errors. Reseating the memory sticks sometimes resolves intermittent faults.

A failing hard drive or SSD can also cause reboots as Windows struggles to read its own files. Warning signs include slow performance, freezing and unusual noises from older drives. If you suspect the drive, back up your data immediately before doing anything else — a failing drive can fail completely without notice.

When to get it diagnosed

If you have ruled out heat, malware and recent updates and the restarts continue, the cause is likely hardware — power supply, memory, storage or motherboard — and benefits from proper testing equipment. Guessing and swapping parts gets expensive fast.

We diagnose restart loops every week across Western Sydney, identify the exact failing component, and quote before any repair. If your data matters, we secure it first. You only pay if we fix the problem, under our No Fix No Fee guarantee.

Stuck in an endless restart loop?

If your PC reboots before Windows even loads, stop trying to force it — you could lose data. TechFix Pro diagnoses restart loops across Western Sydney, secures your files, and quotes upfront. No Fix, No Fee.

Quick checklist

  • Disable automatic restart to read the error
  • Check for overheating and clean the vents
  • Test in Safe Mode to isolate software vs hardware
  • Run a full malware scan
  • Test RAM with Windows Memory Diagnostic

Frequently asked questions

Why does my computer restart randomly with no warning?

Sudden reboots with no blue screen usually point to a power or heat problem — overheating, a failing power supply, or a failing laptop battery. Crashes that show a blue screen first are more often driver, memory or storage faults.

Does overheating really cause restarts?

Yes. When the processor gets too hot, the computer restarts or shuts down to protect itself. Dust-clogged fans and vents are the usual cause, and an internal clean with fresh thermal paste often fixes it.

How do I stop Windows restarting so fast I cannot read the error?

Open Advanced system settings, go to Startup and Recovery, and untick the automatic restart option. The next crash will display the actual error message, which makes diagnosis far easier.

Could a virus make my computer keep restarting?

Yes. Some malware destabilises Windows or hijacks system processes. If restarts come with pop-ups or sluggishness, run a full scan from Safe Mode, and have a technician verify the system is clean if symptoms persist.
