A full hard drive slows Windows 11 significantly — when a drive reaches 90% capacity, performance degrades noticeably. Here is how to reclaim gigabytes without deleting anything important.
Common causes:
- Windows Update files taking gigabytes after major updates
- Temp files accumulating in Temp and AppData folders
- Recycle Bin and Downloads growing unnoticed
- Hibernation file consuming 5–10GB
- Old program installers never cleaned up
Run Storage Sense
Settings → System → Storage → Storage Sense → Run Storage Sense now. Typically recovers 5–20GB safely.
Run Disk Cleanup including system files
Search Disk Cleanup → select C: → click Clean up system files. Check Windows Update Cleanup, Temporary Files, Previous Windows installations. Update Cleanup alone often recovers 5–15GB.
Delete temp files manually
Windows + R → type %temp% → select all → delete. Repeat with C:\Windows\Temp.
Clean up the Downloads folder
Sort by Size. Delete old software installers and files you no longer need.
Uninstall unused programs
Settings → Apps → Installed apps → sort by Size. Uninstall programs you no longer use.
Disable hibernation if you use Sleep mode
Command Prompt as admin: powercfg /hibernate off. Deletes hiberfil.sys which uses 5–10GB. Only if you don't use Hibernate.
