iPad Not Charging — Step-by-Step Fix

An iPad that won't charge is usually a cable, charger or charging port issue rather than a battery fault. Work through these fixes before assuming the battery needs replacement.

An iPad that won't charge is usually a cable, charger or charging port issue rather than a battery fault. Work through these fixes before assuming the battery needs replacement.

Common causes:

  • Faulty or worn USB-C or Lightning cable — most common
  • Lint and debris blocking the charging port
  • Charger doesn't provide enough power
  • iPad charging port is damaged
  • Battery has reached end of life
1

Try a different cable

Apple cables and third-party Lightning/USB-C cables fail regularly. Try a completely different cable. Use Apple-certified (MFi) cables for Lightning iPads.

2

Clean the charging port

Use a wooden toothpick or soft-bristled brush to gently remove lint. Blockage is extremely common and often the complete fix.

3

Try a higher-wattage charger

iPads need more power than iPhones. Use at minimum a 20W USB-C power adapter for modern iPads. A 5W phone charger charges extremely slowly or shows Not Charging.

4

Force restart the iPad

iPad with Face ID: Volume Up → Volume Down → hold Power until Apple logo appears. iPad with Home button: hold Home + Power together for 10 seconds.

5

Check if charging slowly vs not at all

Settings → Battery. If charging very slowly: charger wattage is too low. If Not Charging: cable, charger or port is inadequate. No screen response: deeply depleted battery — leave plugged in for 30 minutes.

6

Check battery health

Settings → Battery → Battery Health and Charging. If Maximum Capacity is below 80%, battery replacement resolves persistent charging issues.

When to call a technician
