An iPad is one of the best devices for video calling — the large screen, simple interface and excellent camera make it easy to see and talk to family. Here is how to use FaceTime and Zoom.

1

FaceTime — calling other Apple users

Tap the FaceTime app (green icon with white camera). Tap the + button. Type the name or phone number of the person — they must have an iPhone, iPad or Mac. Tap the Video Call button.

2

FaceTime — accepting an incoming call

When someone calls you, the iPad rings and shows the caller's name. Tap the green Accept button. Tap End (red button) when finished.

3

Zoom — for calling anyone on any device

See our guide: How to Set Up Zoom for Seniors. Once Zoom is installed, tap a meeting link from your family member's email or text and you will join automatically.

4

Adjusting volume during calls

Use the volume buttons on the side of the iPad. If the screen seems dark, swipe from the top-right corner and drag the brightness slider up.

5

Positioning the iPad for best video

Prop the iPad against a wall or use a stand — at eye level for the most natural-looking conversation. Make sure you are facing a light source.

6

Connecting headphones for clearer audio

Plug in wired headphones or connect AirPods (Settings → Bluetooth). Headphones eliminate background noise and make it much easier to hear.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest video calling app for seniors on iPad?

FaceTime (for other Apple users) is the simplest. For calling people on Android phones or Windows computers, Zoom is the best option.

Does FaceTime cost money?

FaceTime is completely free and uses your WiFi connection — no charges.

Why can't I hear the person I'm calling on FaceTime?

Check the iPad volume with the side buttons. During a FaceTime call, if a microphone icon has a line through it, tap it to unmute.
