Common causes:

Scammers cold-call randomly claiming to represent Microsoft or other trusted brands
Pop-up browser warnings with fake support phone numbers
Scam emails containing callback numbers
Scam ads in search results for computer help

Hang up immediately — do not engage

Do not give any information or follow any instructions. Simply hang up.

If remote access was granted — disconnect from the internet now

Unplug the ethernet cable or turn off WiFi immediately. This cuts off their access.

If you paid by gift card — call the retailer within the hour

Call immediately. If cards are unredeemed, they may freeze them.

If you gave bank details — call your bank's fraud line now

Call the number on the back of your card. Ask them to block the card.

Change passwords from a separate device

If they had screen access, change email, banking and social media passwords from your phone.
