You receive a call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft, Apple, Telstra or Windows Support saying your computer has a virus and needs immediate remote access. This is always a scam. Microsoft and Apple never call customers about computer viruses.
Common causes:
- Scammers cold-call randomly claiming to represent Microsoft or other trusted brands
- Pop-up browser warnings with fake support phone numbers
- Scam emails containing callback numbers
- Scam ads in search results for computer help
Hang up immediately — do not engage
Do not give any information or follow any instructions. Simply hang up.
If remote access was granted — disconnect from the internet now
Unplug the ethernet cable or turn off WiFi immediately. This cuts off their access.
If you paid by gift card — call the retailer within the hour
Call immediately. If cards are unredeemed, they may freeze them.
