How to Reinstall Windows 11 Without Losing Your Files

Reinstalling Windows is the best fix for deep system corruption, persistent blue screens or unusably slow performance. Done correctly it preserves all your personal files.

Option 1: Windows Reset — Keep my files (simplest)

Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC → Keep my files. Reinstalls Windows, preserves personal files. Programs are removed. Takes 1–3 hours.

Option 2: Repair Install via Windows 11 Setup Media (preserves programs)

Download Windows 11 installation media from microsoft.com → run setup.exe → choose Upgrade this PC → Keep personal files and apps. Reinstalls Windows system files while keeping files AND programs.

Backup your files first — always

Before either method: back up Documents, Desktop, Downloads, Pictures to an external drive. Hardware failures can occur during the process.

After Reset — reinstall your programs

Windows displays a list of removed programs after the reset. Reinstall from original downloads or licence keys.

After repair install — reactivate Windows if needed

Windows typically reactivates automatically. If not: Settings → System → Activation → Troubleshoot.

Run Windows Update immediately after

Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates. A fresh Windows installation is usually months behind on patches.
