Windows Update Stuck — How to Fix It

Wait and be patient for large updates

Small updates take 30–60 minutes. Large cumulative updates take 2–3 hours. Only act if absolutely no progress for 3+ hours.

Check Windows Update history

Settings → Windows Update → Update history. The update may have completed silently.

Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Windows Update → Run.

Restart the Windows Update service

Windows + R → services.msc. Windows Update → Stop → wait 30 seconds → Start. Also restart Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS).

Clear the Windows Update cache

Command Prompt as admin: net stop wuauserv then ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old then net start wuauserv.

Use the Windows 11 Update Assistant

For major version updates: download the Windows 11 Update Assistant from microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows11.
