PC Won't Boot Past the Logo Screen — Step-by-Step Fix

When a PC powers on and shows the manufacturer logo but freezes instead of loading Windows, it usually means Windows cannot find or read its boot drive.

When a PC powers on and shows the manufacturer logo but freezes instead of loading Windows, it usually means Windows cannot find or read its boot drive.

Common causes:

  • Windows boot files corrupted or missing
  • Hard drive or SSD not being detected
  • A recent BIOS update changed boot order
  • A loose or failing SATA cable on desktops
  • Secure Boot or Fast Boot settings conflicting
1

Check boot order in BIOS

Press F2, F10, F12 or Delete during startup. Navigate to Boot menu and confirm your main drive is listed first. If missing entirely, that is a hardware detection issue.

2

Disable Fast Boot temporarily

In BIOS settings, find Fast Boot and disable it. Save and exit.

3

Disconnect non-essential drives

If multiple drives are connected, disconnect all except the primary boot drive.

4

Run Windows Startup Repair

Power off mid-boot three times. Automatic Repair launches. Choose Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Startup Repair.

5

Rebuild the Boot Configuration Data

Advanced Options → Command Prompt: bootrec /fixmbr then bootrec /fixboot then bootrec /rebuildbcd.

6

Check SATA connections (desktop only)

Open the case and reseat SATA cables. Try a different SATA port on the motherboard.

When to call a technician

If the drive is not detected in BIOS at all, the issue is hardware. Call TechFix Pro for on-site diagnosis before making changes that could complicate data recovery.
