A printer that powers on but won't print is one of the most common tech frustrations. The issue could be a stuck print queue, a driver problem, an ink issue, or a connectivity fault.

Common causes:

  • A stuck print job blocking all subsequent jobs — most common
  • Printer showing offline
  • Empty ink cartridge or toner not seated correctly
  • Outdated or corrupt printer driver
  • A paper jam not fully cleared
1

Clear the print queue

Windows + R → services.msc → Stop Print Spooler. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS → delete all files inside. Restart Print Spooler. Try printing again.

2

Check ink or toner levels

Check via the manufacturer's software (HP Smart, Epson Printer Utility). Low cartridges often prevent printing entirely.

3

Check for paper jams

Open all access panels — front, back, output tray. Remove paper completely. Small torn pieces cause persistent jam errors.

4

Print a test page from the printer itself

Hold the Resume or Info button while powering on. If it prints, the printer is fine and the issue is computer-to-printer communication.

5

Reinstall the printer driver

Settings → Apps → find printer software → Uninstall. Download the latest driver from the manufacturer's website.

6

Check the default printer setting

Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → turn off Let Windows manage my default printer → set the correct printer as default.

When to call a technician
