Across Australia, thousands of people receive calls every week from scammers claiming to be from Microsoft, Apple or Telstra, saying your computer has a virus. This is always a scam. Here is exactly what to do.

1

If they just called — hang up immediately

Do not engage, do not follow instructions, do not give personal information. Simply hang up.

2

If they ask you to install software — refuse and hang up

Do not install AnyDesk, TeamViewer or any remote access software they request.

3

If you already let them access your computer — disconnect from internet now

Unplug the ethernet cable or turn off WiFi immediately. This cuts off their access. Do not turn the computer off yet.

4

If you paid with a gift card — call the shop within the hour

Call the retailer's customer service immediately. Act within the hour for the best chance.

5

If you gave bank details — call your bank now

Call the fraud line on the back of your card. Tell them you may have given your details to a scammer.

6

Report the scam to Scamwatch

Go to scamwatch.gov.au and report the call.
